Ariège
Nestled in the heart of the Pyrenees, Ariège, a department bordering Spain and Andorra, benefits from a preserved nature and a generous amount of sunshine.
A large part of its territory is a Regional Natural Park since 2009. The variety of fauna and flora is exceptional and the transhumance of sheep, cows and Merens horses is still active. Its grandiose and green landscapes spread out from the rolling hills of the piedmont to the high peaks of 3000m passing by several mythical passes of the Tour de France. Here, wide open spaces are the norm and a feeling of intense freedom invades you and intoxicates you. Mountains and rivers offer an ideal setting for relaxation and outdoor sports: hiking, climbing, potholing, mountain biking, bicycle touring or white water sports.
Ariège is not only an authentic department with its intact mountains, but also a land of history and culture with remarkable sites such as: the Niaux cave, the Castle of Foix, the city of Mirepoix, the castle of Montségur...
Ariège, a territory of nature and character, is also distinguished by its gastronomy and its local products.
This Southwestern cuisine is based on good ingredients, such as cold cuts, mountain cheeses, honeys or duck. In our region, the Azinat, the Mounjetado, or the croustade, are typical dishes that last for the pleasure of the most greedy.
